Why moving my business to Kenilworth was a success and why the town centre continues to flourish
In the first of a new series of articles with Kenilworth Nub News, owner of EDMONDS Jewellers, Carl Edmonds, celebrates the success of the business' move to Warwick Road and says the town centre is bucking the trend in retail.
When EDMONDS made the decision to relocate from Coventry to Kenilworth 18 months ago, we believed the town offered something special.
Looking back today, it is clear that the move has been a tremendous success, both for our business and for the customers who have welcomed us into the community.
What has been particularly encouraging is seeing how Kenilworth has continued to evolve and strengthen during this period. At a time when many town centres across the country have faced significant challenges, Kenilworth has bucked the trend and continued to attract new businesses, investment and visitors.
In my opinion, much of this success comes from the unique qualities that make Kenilworth such an attractive destination.
The town benefits from beautiful walks leading into the centre, the incredible backdrop of Kenilworth Castle, excellent amenities such as Waitrose, Sainsburys, a strong independent retail sector, and an abundance of coffee shops, cafés and restaurants. Together, these create a welcoming environment that encourages people to spend time in the town rather than simply passing through.
We regularly welcome customers who travel up to 45 minutes to visit us. Kenilworth has become an easy and accessible destination for a day out, attracting visitors from Coventry, Meriden, Balsall Common, Warwick, Leamington Spa and many surrounding areas.
People can enjoy shopping, dining, meeting friends and exploring the town, all within a relaxed and attractive setting.
One of the factors that makes Kenilworth particularly successful is what I describe as the "cluster effect".
While the town may have several businesses operating within similar sectors, including opticians, coffee shops, bookshops, charity shops, jewellers, hairdressers and many others, this actually benefits consumers.
Greater choice encourages higher standards, better customer service and helps establish Kenilworth as a destination where people know they will find exactly what they are looking for.
The town has also seen a number of exciting new businesses open their doors since EDMONDS arrived, including Banking Hub, B & M, Air Ambulance, Shires Physio, Charlotte, Mavi, Rawr, Morning Sunshine, Ada Digital, Wedge, BrewQuest and Wetherspoon. Each of these businesses has added something different to the town and contributed to its continued growth.
Several established businesses have also been successfully reinvented through new ownership and investment. The Almanack, Greens, The Ark and the Ryman's/Robert Dyas premises have all undergone positive transformations, demonstrating confidence in the future of the town.
Of course, no high street is immune from change. During this period, we have also seen the closure, or impending closure, of businesses including Iceland, Rachel Reid, Carrick Travel, Wilko, Buyrite, Cancer Research, The Bear & Ragged Staff, Milk & Mocha and Hayes Travel.
However, what stands out in Kenilworth is the resilience of the local economy and the speed at which vacant premises are often reoccupied or reimagined.
As a business owner, it has been encouraging to witness the continued confidence in Kenilworth. Our move from Coventry has exceeded expectations, and we remain grateful for the support we have received from local residents, fellow businesses and visitors alike.
Another factor that should not be overlooked is how attractive the town looks throughout the year. The beautiful floral displays and planters, organised and maintained by Kenilworth in Bloom, make a significant contribution to the town's appearance. These displays create a welcoming atmosphere for residents and visitors alike and help give Kenilworth the charm and character that sets it apart from many other town centres.
The past 18 months have shown that Kenilworth remains one of the most vibrant and attractive town centres in the region. With a strong mix of independent retailers, national brands, hospitality businesses and community spirit, the town continues to demonstrate that thriving high streets are still possible when the right ingredients come together.
Apologies to any fellow businesses I may have accidentally missed! We recognise all businesses in the town centre have added to the continued success and vibrancy of our town centre.
