Plans to partially demolish village house to make way for four new homes refused
Plans to partly demolish a Balsall Common house to make way for four new homes behind it have been thrown out by the council.
Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council rejected the scheme which would have seen the side extension of a Station Road house knocked down to create a new access road leading to the four new buildings.
The four and five bed houses would have been built on overgrown scrubland as well as part of the gardens of some existing properties.
The application said the scheme would: "Would represent a well-balanced and designed scheme that will enhance the distinctiveness of this part of Balsall Common."
But council planners disagreed saying the development would negatively impact the local area.
Refusing the application, a council report said: "The proposed development would represent poor urban design, the layout, design, size, scale and massing of which would be at odds to its surroundings and would not respect the existing pattern of development, being alien and out of character with the surrounding area and undermining the established grain of development.
"On this basis the proposed new dwellings would fail to respect, maintain or enhance the local distinctiveness and character of the surrounding area."
A similar scheme had previously been approved by councillors in 2019 but was overturned by the court during a judicial review after it was revealed that the planning committee had not been informed of objections to the plan.
The council considered the application again and it was refused, with the decision being upheld after an appeal.
