The town council has objected to unpopular plans to build six electric vehicle charging points at petrol station in the town centre.

Motor Fuel Group has put forward the plans for an EV charging zone at the Shell garage on Warwick Road but councillors raised a number of concerns about the scheme.

Speaking at the last Kenilworth Town Council planning meeting, Cllr Pippa Austin said: "There are inconsistencies in the application and there is a lack of detail for a start.

"There aren't any trees mentioned in the application and yet the site location plan says there will be trees removed.

"The current opening time is seven to 11 for this particular site but there isn't any indication as to whether this will apply to the EV Charging."

Cllr Michael Coker also questioned when the charging points would be available.

"The time factor is equally important if it is to be granted," he said.

"When it is available is very important because there are a lot of houses there all of which are affected by the station's lighting and noise.

"If it is going to happen then it should be limited so that it is within reasonable hours."

The application says the plans will help meet the growing need for EV infrastructure and will "enhance the existing offer at the service station, without compromising the efficient operation of the facility".

"In terms of design, the proposed EV charging area has been carefully planned to positively integrate with the existing service station operation," it said.

"The charging facility offers a modern design approach, which is uncluttered and fit for purpose."

While councillors were in agreement that more EV charging points was positive, they said the scheme must not harm the appearance of the conservation area.

Cllr Andrew Milton added: "I think the design is really out of keeping with the area, it's clearly a prefabricated drop-in type solution.

"I have seen these in other places as well."
