Kenilworth Wardens Reserves are still on the hunt for their first three points of the season, as they host Crick Athletic this Saturday (October 24).
In their opening five fixtures this season, the Reserves have accumulated just one point, from a 1-1 draw with Coventrians on the opening day.
However, the four straight defeats that have followed are perhaps misleading about their form, with all of their defeats being by close margins.
The Reserves have conceded ten goals this season - the fourth most in the division. However, whilst being competitive in every game, going forward they have netted only five times, and will certainly need to score more than once a game if they are to stay in the Coventry Alliance Division Three this season.
Meanwhile their opponents this weekend, Crick Athletic, sit third in the division, and are yet to lose this season having won three times and drawn twice.
Crick also finished the shortened 2019/20 season in first place, on 28 points from eleven games, however they were denied promotion as the leagues were reshuffled. They were in fact leap-frogged by a Kenilworth Wardens Firsts side whom they drew 4-4 with that same season.
Whilst this will sound ominous to Wardens Reserves' fans, Crick's last three games were all against bottom-four sides, and that included a 1-1 draw with second-bottom Bourton and Frankton. Their game against Witnash ended 3-3, which will be particularly poignant for the Reserves given how well they played against Witnash in both of their games this season.
Moreover, the Reserves have continued to grow in confidence, and build as a team as they receive fringe players from neighbours Kenilworth Sporting.
Further impetus will come from the fact that only four points separate tenth from sixth in the division. This as well as the fact that ninth-placed Bourton are playing table toppers Witnash, and seventh-placed Harbury travel to Eastern Green who are in eighth.
A win this weekend would in all likelihood take the Reserves off the bottom spot.
This weekend's game is a real opportunity, therefore, for the Reserves to get their season up and running, in an attempt to stay in Division Three after their promotion last season.
Kick off is at 3pm on Saturday, October 24 at Kenilworth Wardens Community Sports Club, Glasshouse Lane.
