Councillors have unanimously backed a tree protection order for a mature Kenilworth tree, despite the pleas of a homeowner to be able to chop it down.

The residents on Fieldgate Lane wanted to fell the mature cedar tree saying it makes them feel "vulnerable" and that it is impacting their mental health.

The homeowners had asked to cut down the tree at the end of 2025, with the move blocked by Warwick District Council with a provision tree protection order (TPO).

And at a meeting of the council's planning committee last week, councillors made that order permanent, meaning any works to the tree will be restricted and will need permission from the local authority.

Development manager Gary Fisher explained: "What we are asking members to agree to this evening, is the making and confirmation of the tree preservation order.

"What we are not asking members to say is that this tree must always stay exactly as it is.

"Clearly it needs to be managed."

The tree is believed to be at least 40 years old.

In their original application to the council, the homeowner said: "Our neighbours both sides are fully supportive of our request to take the tree out, as they suffer with the same issues.

"We do feel vulnerable and it does affect our mental health.

"The fact that it is such a huge tree and so close to all of our thatched cottages, we have concerns that when the wind picks up that the tree is top heavy and could fall into our houses.

"It could easily take two houses out and could result in a loss of life.

"The tree would be perfect in a park or golf course but not in a small domestic garden."
