A poor performance by Kenilworth Wardens Firsts meant they lost a very competitive game to Coventry Colliery Reserves 4-2 this weekend, to leave them fifth in the Coventry Alliance Division Two.
Wardens started off the better side, creating chances. They scored their opening goal after 10 minutes when Kingston found Pearson on the left hand side of the box, Pearson rode two challenges before prodding the ball home to make it 1-0.
Wardens had several opportunities to add to their lead, with forward play by Andy Legg, Pearson and Jack Taylor continued to present chances, but the final finish let down the great interplay.
On 30 minutes the game changed when a long free kick was headed in by Colliery's striker. Bringing the game level.
Two minutes later Colliery were ahead, after their left winger beat two Wardens players and smashed the ball into the bottom corner to finish a brilliant individual goal. 2-1 to Coventry Colliery
Wardens then levelled after a long ball forward was flicked on by Legg. Pearson latched onto the ball and volleyed home from 30 yards, lobbing the keeper for his seventh goal of the season.
The game was level at 2-2 at the break.
After half time, the match became stretched, with both teams missing chances to take the lead.
Missing the absent Rudd in midfield, Wardens made further changes to the side. However, rather than improving, the new set up was unbalanced.
Colliery took the lead on 60 minutes from a set piece. Miscommunication in the Wardens' line allowed a free header from a corner, to make the score 3-2 to the hosts.
The game carried on with chances for both sides, Wardens' goalkeeper Whitehouse, carrying a serious ankle injury, made several saves to keep the away side in the game, whilst there was a missed open goal from the otherwise flawless Pearson.
With the game stretched, Colliery added a fourth goal with 10 minutes left. Wardens had attempted to play offside, but a smart run from Colliery's number nine broke the line and he went through to score.
The rain and quality of pitch hampered Wardens play, and as the game went passing football became harder execute.
In the final minutes there were yellow cards to Wardens' Richards and Shanley for a poor challenges. The latter ending up in handbags with both sides involved.
Kenilworth Wardens Firsts remain then on ten points, and drop to fifth place in the division, five points behind first-placed Triumph Athletic Reserves who they face next weekend.
