Residents along Warwick Road have said they do not want speed bumps right up to St John's roundabout.

Local councils had launched an informal consultation asking for feedback on outline plans for traffic calming along the busy road into town.

Around 250 homeowners across the nearby streets were asked whether they would want speed cushions from Wilkshire Road up to Rouncil Lane, or beyond Rouncil Lane all the way to St John's roundabout.

Updating members at the most recent Kenilworth Town Council meeting, Cllr Rik Spencer said there had been a unanimous response from locals.

"The informal consultation laid out the plans of what could be done and asked for residents to buy into those options," he said.

"The result is - to my surprise - the residents who live on the Warwick Road section from the gyratory to Rouncil Lane, unanimously said they didn't want traffic calming on that section of road."

Cllr Spencer said the formal consultation will be launched soon, where locals will be given a say on the detailed designs for the traffic calming measures.

He also said the decision not to have speed bumps as far as the roundabout would ease the design for a possible new cycle path.

"It does alleviate some of the pressure on the design of the cycle route," he added.

"That is a work in progress, but they [Warwickshire County Council] are looking at what to do with that bit of road between Rouncil Lane and the gyratory."

The town council has already approved a £63,000 spend from its CIL budget for the 'Kenilworth Gateway' scheme which aims to improve safety along the busy road.

Councillors also said the scheme would help connect residents on the Pavilions estate with the rest of the town.

A final decision on whether the scheme will go ahead is expected in April.

The Warwick Road project follows a petition submitted to Warwickshire County Council by local residents calling on members to "see sense" and move the 30mph speed limit past the entrance to the estate.

Residents also called for more street lighting and better cycling provision.

More information on the scheme can be found here.
