A petition calling for more street lighting, a reduced speed limit and safe cycling areas along Warwick Road has been started by a Kenilworth councillor.

It comes after a number of residents in the new Pavilions housing development raised concerns about road safety.

With a children's play area close to the main road and with many cyclists using the highway to travel from Kenilworth to Leek Wootton, the petition calls on Warwickshire County Council to 'see sense' and consider residents' safety.

Started by Liberal Democrat Cllr Richard Dickson, it already has over 100 signatures.

Cllr Dickson said the county council has refused to move the start of the 50mph speed limit further down the road "despite film evidence of several near miss accidents".

Residents have also complained that it is hard to join the 50mph main road from the housing site.

"Since these new sites were first proposed more than two years ago the county council highways department has refused to consider moving the 50mph limit even just a couple of hundred metres to help improve road safety," he said.

"Many local residents and all kinds of road users have told local Liberal Democrat campaigners about their concerns about the 50mph speed limit on Warwick Road close to The Pavilions housing development and the separate planned site of the new Kenilworth Rugby Club on the brow of the hill."

As well as changing the speed limit zones, the petition has called on WCC to extend street lighting along Warwick Road as there are currently no lights between Newey Drive and The Pavilions site.

Residents have until December 31 to sign the petition before it will be considered by the county council.

Cllr Dickson added: "The online and paper petition has already attracted more than 100 signatures, so we're hoping that the county council will see sense and move the speed limit zone to make it safer for all road users."

A 1,000 signature strong petition was presented to WCC in July calling for more street lights across the county to ensure the safety of women in Warwickshire.

However WCC is yet to take any significant action on this across the region.
