With the unofficial holiday of halloween fast approaching, residents of Leek Wootton are being encouraged to participate in a 'Halloweendows' event in the village.

As social distancing rules prohibit any of the usual halloween antics of themed parties and 'trick or treating,' residents have found a new way of keeping the community spirit alive.

People in Leek Wootton are being encouraged to decorate their windows, and the front of their houses in time for October 31 to enable local children to still enjoy the day's events. The idea being that they can still dress up and have some much-needed fun, by spotting the halloween apparel around the village.

Whether it be carving a happy face on a pumpkin, putting up decorations, or painting a picture, this is an opportunity for everyone, young and old.

Event organiser Emily Morris said "with no trick or treating this year I just thought it would be nice to create something for the children to walk around and spot the halloween decorations.

"Maybe grown ups with them could then offer them a sweet for each find.

"Everyone just wants to have some fun. Kids can spend October (half term especially) creating their windows, when now more than likely they'll be in lockdown. Then everyone can walk around and enjoy."

The event has is being replicated across the UK this coming October, and follows the last six months of community-based activities that have served so well during the coronavirus pandemic.

Whilst Halloween isn't always the most popular event with some people, this is more than just buying into commercialism.

Emily says "I totally understand Halloween isn't for everyone, but I hoped people would get behind the fun side of it which is all the children see."

If you are taking part then please send in your creations to [email protected] and we would love to showcase them on our website and social media channels!
