English Heritage has bought a piece of land around Kenilworth Castle which, up until last summer, was used as a popular events bar.

The charity confirmed to Nub News it has bought the 'Castle Pavilions' plot, but says it is yet to make any concrete decisions on what it will be used for.

Matt Bulford, head of historic properties for English Heritage in Warwickshire, said: "Local residents will know that an area of around five acres of land including the old golf pavilion – off Castle Road, just south of Kenilworth Castle – had been advertised for sale for the last year.

"I can confirm that English Heritage has been able to purchase this land.

"While the charity doesn't have a specific plan in place for its use yet, we wanted to secure this vital link between the castle and the town.

"Kenilworth Castle has a privileged position at the heart of this community, and we are committed to working together as plans for its future progress.

"We will, of course, be keeping local residents involved and informed along the way."

Last year Warwick District Council (WDC) was successful in its bid to make it harder for the pop-up Garden Bar at the Pavilion to run events on the land.

The move was started after multiple complaints from neighbours who claimed the regular events were ruining their quality of life.

Locals did rally around the bar, with a petition to save it receiving over 1,100 signatures.

But WDC was able to push through a permanent article four direction, limiting what the Pavilions can be used for.

Speaking to Nub News last year the former landowner Gabrielle Parry said she had "lost the will to fight" to keep the events running, and decided to put the Pavilions site up for sale.

English Heritage did not confirm how much the land was purchased for, but property agent Godfrey Payton was advertising it for offers over £250,000.

Locals have speculated that the land will be used as an overflow car park.
