A group of travellers who moved onto Kenilworth Rugby Club's pitch at the start of the week have been moved on by police, the club has confirmed.

Locals were told to stay away from the Glasshouse Lane clubhouse on Monday (May 29) after a number of caravans parked up on the playing surfaces.

Warwickshire Police then served a notice for the travellers to move on Wednesday evening.

And taking to social media yesterday (June 1) the club confirmed the travellers have now moved on but said a clean up operation was now underway.

"Following a challenging few days, Kenilworth RFC are delighted to announce that the clubhouse will soon re-open after the recent departure of some uninvited visitors," the statement said.

"We would like to thank everyone involved in managing the situation the club found itself in, the offers of help from our members and the wider community were very much appreciated.

"We would like to add our thanks and admiration in particular to those who gave up their time to be onsite and to club steward Paul Phillips for his professionalism and vigilance during the last few days."

The club also said it a number of repairs are now needed across the site, with some "hugely frustrating" and "considerable" costs likely.

But the clubhouse bar will be open on today (June 2) at 6pm.

"We would also like to thank Warwickshire Police and Umbrella Security Services for their speedy response and support in our time of need," the statement added.

"The club will be increasing security at both the Main Site and the Cow Patch (only pedestrian access is available currently) and we would appreciate the co operation of our members and visitors once these processes are in place."
