Kenilworth election candidates share final plea to voters to say why you should vote for them

3rd Jul 2024 | General Election 2024
Election hopefuls looking to become Kenilworth's next MP have made their final plea to voters ahead of tomorrow's general election.
Some seven candidates have put themselves forward in Kenilworth and Southam - will locals set to find out who their new MP is in the early hours of Friday morning.
Nub News asked all seven of the candidates why voters should choose them.
This is what they said...
Jenny Wilkinson - Liberal Democrats
Since my selection as the Lib Dem candidate for Kenilworth and Southam over two years ago, I have been out and about across the constituency, listening to your concerns.
If elected, I will continue to listen to you, take action to address your issues, and be a strong voice for our area in Parliament.
My local priorities for the constituency are:
- Local health services - we need ambition to fix this crisis through a joined-up approach to invest in and integrate health and social care.
- Our precious environment - from HS2, to huge housing developments, to sewage dumping in our rivers, local nature is under siege. I’d press for policies to ensure our beautiful area is protected for generations to come.
- Local businesses - through reform of business rates, investment in training, and breaking down trade barriers we can reduce the burden on local business and let them unleash their potential.
- Community-led development - I want to ensure that local developments come with the infrastructure we need. We must tackle housing shortages, but this shouldn’t add to the burden on local schools, GPs and transport.
- Education - I will push for above-inflation increases to school funding and more local SEND provision to ensure every child can access the support they need.
Every vote for me, is a vote for a local champion who will fight for a fair deal for residents across the constituency.
Alix Dearing - Green Party
A Green vote is for the future not the past, with substance and not slogans.
Right now we need hope and ambition.
The Green Party’s principles are for a fairer, greener country: putting people first and investing in our future. Understandably voters are frustrated and cynical about the way this country has been governed for the last 14 years. Ideology has driven funding cuts and exploitation across the board, leading to worsening frontline services and insufficient investment in this country’s skills and economy.
Other parties want you to think that after the election only more austerity, mediocrity and having no strategy will be possible. Why? Because honesty with the public takes courage.
The Green Party have that courage: we offer popular, practical solutions to transform society for the better: new affordable homes, a fully funded NHS and essential services held in public ownership, funded in part by modest tax increases on the extremely rich.
We owe it to our children and grandchildren to turn things around before inequality, climate change, ridiculous local rent and house prices, lack of opportunity and quality jobs, bring families to their knees.
So why vote for me and the Green Party? I live in Kenilworth and am rooted in the community as an ex-Mayor and District Councillor. As a current Town Councillor, I want to build on what I have learned and be your representative in Westminster advocating to get what Warwickshire deserves, not Westminster’s voice here. The previous MP’s voting record is not what I would have done.
In contrast, the Greens are known for working hard all year round to support and protect community interests. A Green voice in the room changes the debate by reminding us of the real, urgent priorities, people and the planet, not self-promotion and culture wars.
Also Greens are not beholden to big donors who buy influence which enables poor decision making; we are funded and supported at the grassroots level. Our newsletters inform you all year round whether there is an election or not.
Specifically here, I will establish much higher standards of insulation and construction, working toward Passivhaus standards in a mix of private and affordable housing.
This also helps to permanently reduce energy bills and make homes healthier. I will also protect nature on the Green Belt through nature corridors, and a “brownfield and greybelt first” approach, pushing local councils for a rooftop revolution in low-cost solar power. I’ll challenge the unrealistic house-building targets from Whitehall, which are based on false assumptions about need.
Furthermore, we need safe, coordinated active-transport improvements, and to mend our roads. Solving traffic congestion will also help to revive our shabby town centres.
Local Green Party councillors are engaging fully to make the new Local Plan for South Warwickshire – which legally binds future development plans for decades – to be fairer and greener. Finally, public decisions must always reflect local views; I will continue creating residents’ panels to give real hope and real change through local democracy in action.
I want the best for all generations in Warwickshire now and in the future. The most tactical vote is Green.
Sir Jeremy Wright - Conservative Party
As the General Election draws to a close, I have now held over 12 hours of public meetings where I have answered questions put to me by voters in all corners of this constituency, in addition to hustings with other candidates and to knocking on hundreds of doors.
No other candidates have done the same. That is the sort of accessibility and accountability I believe in as a candidate and as a Member of Parliament. I believe that living in the constituency you seek to represent is important and I am the only major party candidate who does.
I also believe that in applying for the job as your MP, as in any other job, skills and experience matter. I have done this job for 19 years and served as a Minister too, so I know how to help my constituents most effectively.
I don’t have to rely on promises to persuade you that I will do a good job, I have a record of working with others to bring improvements to our area – new school buildings, GP surgeries and a re-opened railway station.
I don’t just call for things or demand things, I get things done. I am standing for re-election in the constituency I live in so that I can continue being a local, experienced and effective MP for you and for our area.
Cat Price (Labour)
This campaign has been about the change our country so badly needs but I also want to deliver change for Kenilworth and Southam locally. I bring a commitment to progressive values, community engagement and practical solutions to the issues residents are facing. My vision for Kenilworth and Southam is grounded in fairness, opportunity, and sustainability.
I understand the local issues that matter most to you. From improving public transport and ensuring our schools are well-funded, to supporting our local businesses and protecting our green spaces, my focus is on enhancing the quality of life for all residents.
I have a track record of working in key public services and directly with communities, listening to concerns, and implementing effective change.
I am dedicated to social justice and equality. I will fight to ensure that everyone in Kenilworth and Southam has access to high-quality healthcare, affordable housing, and opportunities for employment and education. My commitment to these principles is unwavering, and I believe that a fairer society benefits us all.
I will be an accessible and accountable MP, regularly holding surgeries, town hall meetings, and using digital platforms to keep in touch with constituents. Transparency and responsiveness are at the core of my approach.
Finally, I stand for a sustainable future. I will advocate for policies that address climate change, promote renewable energy, and support sustainable agriculture in our rural areas. Protecting our environment for future generations is a priority that cannot be overlooked.
Together, we can build a better, fairer Kenilworth and Southam. If this is the change you want to see, please come out and vote for it on 4 July.
Jacqui Harris - Reform UK
A vote is a very personal thing. Each of us have experiences on our journey through life that makes us who we are and our specific needs.
Our Contract is with the people each person will decide what is right for them
As seen via the link above it shows we have listened to what most people need and what is required to get this country back on its feet, that this country needs to change.
The mechanism of government is not working, it needs reviewing to deliver for everyone and Reform UK recognise this.
I believe I have the experience and knowledge to deliver for the constituency and deliver on our contract.
Nicholas Blunderbuss Green (Official Monster Raving Loony Party)
It isn't good. When you switch the TV on, there is a new bloody policy that has come out.
Whatever it may be, just out of the blue. It's just another policy to get them elected.
I know it is nothing new, but some of them are just a joke. I think the main parties do more to ridicule politics on a whole than our party.
I think they are making us redundant, slowly but surely.
I have a saying at the moment - if you don't usually vote, vote unusually.
Paul De'Ath (UKIP)
