Another slow start saw Kenilworth Sporting 2-0 down inside nine minutes to promotion hopefuls Coton Green at Gypsy Lane yesterday afternoon.

The Tamworth-based side then went on to win 3-2 leaving Sporting still wanting for their first win in the Midland Football League Division Two this season.

Playing against one of the favourites to get promoted Ascroft knew it was going to be tough game, but found himself frustrated at his side's sloppy start to the game.

Stuart Hendrie and Ryan Conlon had already netted for the visitors before Sporting started to get going.

The hosts did manage to pull one back on 38 minutes when Luke Steer disposed the Coton Green centre half, rounded the keeper and made it 2-1.

Kenilworth then finished the first half strongly but were unable to equalise.

A second Sporting goal still looked on the cards, only for an uncharacteristic spill from Kenilworth keeper George Woodward allowed Corey Powell to restore the two goal cushion for the visitors.

Sporting then had it all to do after Hughes' 75th minute red card for a dangerous tackle.

Hope was restored for Kenilworth on 85 minutes when Alpha Wurie was fouled by the onrushing Coton keeper. Steer was then on hand to slot in Kenilworth's second

However, Coton were able to hold on and claim their first victory of the season.

Speaking after the game Ascroft said: "I can't remember losing two on the trot before.

"Obviously it's not the start we wanted, but it's still early in the season, we need get that first win and hopefully we can kick on then.

"I'm under no illusion that the buck stops with me and I have to find the right team and formation that suits us but also suits this new league."

Kenilworth Sporting will host 12th placed Hampton who are also looking for their first win of the season.
