Kenilworth Wardens Reserves stuttering start to the season continues

Kenilworth Wardens Reserves remain waiting for their first win of the season after falling to a 3-1 defeat to Brinklow. A touch of pathetic fallacy was evident as the Wardens' display, like the weather, started brightly, but finished gloomy.

The Wardens should have fallen behind after just three minutes, but Charlie Stranks made a point-blank save from a volley, tipping the ball into the bar.

Perhaps a sign of what was to come, as a speculative effort also sailed onto the bar and over soon after. But the Wardens eventually got a foothold in the game.

A long ball forward caused some confusion in Brinklow's defence, with the ball landing at Povey's feet. He managed to get a shot away, but it was deflected over.

The resulting corner was floated in by captain Dane Watt towards the back post, and Joe Carter rose to head it across goal, only for the keeper to make a smart save.

Wardens took advantage of their spell on top, by taking the lead. The ever-combative Alex Waters who, despite suffering from the after-effects of a tikka masala lunch, won another tackle on the half way line.

An attempted pass between the centre back and full back was just about cut out, but the ball fell to Povey 25 yards out. He took a touch to set himself, and hit a low drive to the keeper's left, leaving him helpless on the line as the ball struck the post and went in.

Wardens created another half-chance from a set piece, and looked dangerous against a Brinklow side who struggled with the aerial threat. This time, a ball was floated in from deep, with Chris Lewis winning the ball, flicking it on into the keepers gloves.

For their dominance, the second goal wouldn't come for the away side and Brinklow got back in the game. A questionable refereeing decision led to a free kick which was dealt with, but the resulting corner caused confusion in the box. The ball was drilled in and ricocheted into the goal, quite possibly from a Wardens player.

Going into half time, there were reasons to be optimistic and a there was great belief the Wardens could get a result. However the second half never really materialised in the same way. Waters had to go off in the interval, for fear that his curry would make a reappearance, and Wardens missed him breaking up the play.

Nonetheless, Joe Carter and Rossi Farquarson looked solid at the back, with both putting in assured performances with neither being troubled. Brinklow started to dominate, as the wardens couldn't hold the ball or keep possession. An innocuous ball forward was met by the boot of a Brinklow player, and with the wind behind it, the ball looped over Charlie Stranks head into the goal to make it 2-1.

Wardens rallied but couldn't get back in the game. The third Brinklow goal again came out of nowhere, and with 10 minutes to go, sealed the result. The Brinklow left back had time and space and entered the Wardens half unopposed. A hopeful long ball aimed at their striker was massively mis-hit but with the wind again behind Brinklow, the ball carried into the Wardens Goal.

The day ended as a disappointment for both Wardens sides, as a five minute lapse in concentration cost the First team as they hosted AFC Coventry.
