Kenilworth local are invited to a picnic viewing of the partial eclipse on Wednesday (August 12).

The event will take place in Abbey Fields from 6pm to 8pm.

The phenomenon occurs when the moon aligns perfectly between the sun and the earth.

On Wednesday the eclipse will pass over the UK sometime between 7.02pm and 7.16pm and will see around 90 per cent of the sun covered by the moon for UK watchers.

Kenilworth's event is being organised by Dr Teresa Pinheiro of the University of Warwick.

"I am organising the event with the backing of the Stratford-upon-Avon Astronomical Society (SAS) as a committee member for Social Events," she told Nub News.

"The society is providing certified solar eclipse glasses to those attending.

"As part of their wider outreach mission, they will also be giving away a limited number of eclipse glasses to passers-by and other organised groups.

"SAS members will be there with a couple of solar telescopes to support the event.

"There will be other fun activities with pin-hole cameras and kitchen colanders to project the solar eclipse."

The event will be hosted at the top of Abbey Fields, to the left of the war memorial.
