Kenilworth Wardens made it two wins on the bounce with an exciting 3-2 victory at home over title chasing Hampton Magna.

Goals from Dan Twigger and Dane Watt had put Wardens two to the good, only for Scott Watkin and Nick Hill to then draw Magna level.

But Twigger was on target from the spot midway through the second half to seal the points for Kenilworth and to give George Ferridge a huge win in his first game in charge.

"I couldn't have wished for a better start with this team and today's result solidifies my view that we can kick on to real success next year," Ferridge - who takes the role full time next season - said.

"The effort given by each of the 13 players in the squad was faultless, with a number of standout individual performances."

Hampton started the game well, keeping Wardens inside their own half, but without creating many open chances.

Magna's top scorer Mark Hickey caused centre back James Carro and Ryan Oldham problems, but the pair managed to restrict Hickey to flick ons.

Despite being under pressure, Wardens took the lead on 25 minutes. Captain Eamonn Richards started the move with a ball to Ben Edmunds, who played to Twigger, who passed to Dane Watt.

Watt took a touch and played an excellent slipped through ball to Twigger who hit the ball hard into the bottom corner from a tight angle.

Five minutes later Magna had a deep free kick which was cleared by Oldham. Richards picked up the ball on the edge of the box and sprayed a 50 yard cross field pass to Edmunds on the left hand side.

Edmunds controlled and held the ball, before volleying forward towards the deep run of Watt who, with the keeper sprinting forward, nonchalantly volleyed the ball over the keeper from 30 yards out making it 2-0.

Wardens could have had a third when Charlie Waters' ball forward on the half way line was controlled by Twigger, who turned, beat three players at a sprint before smashing his shot narrowly over at the near post.

On the stroke of half time Magna pulled one back. An initial effort from a corner was saved by stand in keeper James Butcher but Watkins managed to turn the ball in from the ensuing goal mouth scramble.

And the visitors quickly drew level after the restart when a deep cross from the right was not dealt with by the Wardens defence, allowing Hill to turn in from four yards out.

Magna looked likely to score another, putting the Wardens back line under constant pressure.

Under this pressure the otherwise excellent James Smith gave away an unnecessary penalty for a two handed shove into the back of a Magna player as they ran towards the corner flag.

Hickey stepped up to the spot only for his effort to be excellently and surprisingly saved by Butcher.

Moments later Wardens had the ball up the other end. Watt recovered possession for Richards who passed to Edmunds. The winger beat three players and was forced wide. His cross hit the elevated arm of the Magna full back leading to a Wardens penalty.

Twigger stepped up and hammered in for his 21st Sunday goal of the season to restore the host's advantage.

Magna pushed for an equaliser but struggled to create chances, mostly due to the excellent defending of James Butler and Oldham.

Magna's best effort was a lofted chip from Jordan Newbould, which Butcher managed to tip over the bar as it looked set to sneak in.

Despite the extra eight minutes of added time Wardens held on for the win, much to the delight of Ferridge.

"Credit to Magna making it difficult for us and applying constant pressure, they're a great side and it serves as a real marker of what we have building here that we were able to beat them," he added.

"Special mention has to go to James Butcher going in goal at the last minute.

"It was a really selfless performance from him that showed me his leadership and team-first mentality, not to mention a top penalty save to keep the score level."
