Town councillors have objected to plans to build 220 homes across two sites on the current Kenilworth Rugby Club grounds.

Developer Bloor Homes has applied to Warwick District Council to build 170 houses built on the 'Cowpatch' site, with the remaining 50 to be built where the current clubhouse sits.

Plans show that 3.9 hectares of public space would be included in the new estates, including cycleways, a play area and more tree planting.

A new junction with Glasshouse Lane would need to be made for the larger part of the development at The Spinney, while the current access to the rugby club would also be "upgraded".

The project will eventually see Kenilworth Rugby Club relocate to Warwick Road.

But Kenilworth Town Council's planning committee were not happy with the proposed new access to the estates.

"Can I propose that we object to this on the basis of the impact on The Spinney, at the entrance to the site at parcel A," Cllr Andrew Milton said.

"There must be another way of getting into the site without having to take trees out of The Spinney, however difficult that is.

"We should make it the developer's problem. It is contrary again to the development brief."

Cllr Milton also suggested the developer be told to make the main access road connect to the neighbouring estates already under construction, rather than adding more traffic to Glasshouse Lane.

Other members questioned the impact of the application's sustainability report, labelling it "inadequate".

Cllr John Dearing said: "My suggestion is we urge them to meet the same standards that are in the pending DPD as a minimum.

"That at least would set a baseline they can follow."

While Cllr Peter Jones backed objections already submitted to the scheme about the noise from the nearby dual carriageway.

"I am also unhappy that a lot of these developments are slap bang next to the A46 which is a very noisy road," he said.

"I wouldn't want to live anywhere near it.

"And yet they are planning that some poor so and so is going to have to pay big money and have this whine all through the day."
