An application for the relocation of Kenilworth Rugby Club from Glasshouse Lane to the land east of Warwick Road in Kenilworth has been approved by the Planning Committee of Warwick District Council at their meeting tonight (February 2).

The relocation will see the construction of a new clubhouse, seven pitches, landscaping, earthworks, parking, access and ancillary facilities.

The motion to approve the WDC recommendation that the relocation be granted was proposed by Cllr Richard Dickson (Ken St John's, Lib Dem) and the vote unanimously in favour of the recommendation.

The move is sanctioned for development under the Warwick District Local Plan 2011-2029, full details of which can be found here.

The development will see two junior and five senior pitches, as well as a two-storey clubhouse. The ground floor of the clubhouse will be dedicated for a gym, changing rooms, and other facilities. The first floor then houses the corporate side, with a bar, meeting rooms and steward's flat.

Speaking in the public window Cllr Andrew Milton (Ken St John's, Lib Dem) said "The club have put forward a strong vision which not only provides a top class sporting facility, but also brings with it good social and wellbeing benefits of sports to our local community across all age groups."

The approval of the application now means that development can be put in motion.

As pitches will need two full growing seasons before they can be played on, the club hope to start pitch work this coming spring, in the hopes that rugby will be played on the new site from the 2022-3 season onwards.
