A local MP has maintained her objection to a 750-metre HS2 cutting to the north of Kenilworth, saying more needs to be done to reduce noise for local residents.

MP for Coventry South Zarah Sultana first objected to the designs for the Canley Brook cutting in March, stating that residents on the Coventry side of the project were not being considered.

HS2 - which initially proposed a 100-metre long, four-metre-high sound barrier on the south side of the line - has now submitted more details on how it will mitigate noise.

But the Labour MP said more needed to be done to protect locals to the north of the route.

"On behalf of my constituents in the Gibbet Hill area in Coventry, I have previously formally registered concerns with the railway cutting, the vertical track realignment, and the associated landscaping works and noise mitigations in this area of my constituency of Coventry South," she said.

"Specifically, I objected to the disparity between the noise pollution mitigations planned on the Kenilworth side versus the Coventry side."

Ms Sultana pointed out that residents sleeping with their windows open would be disrupted by noise, particularly in the summer.

She added: "My constituents and I would like you to consider granting planning permission to this application only once a further Noise Demonstration Report is produced that includes an improved design with a fuller range of mitigation options which would have greater impact than those proposed in the ES design."

HS2 has previously announced changes to the Canley Brook cutting which it said would vastly reduce the amount of excavation needed along that section of the line.

Changes have also meant the brook will only need to be diverted by around 80 metres rather than the 700 originally planned.

A separate application for this work will be submitted by HS2.

The High Speed Rail Act 2017 decrees the cutting will happen at some point, but approval for certain design and construction matters must still be given by the local authority.
