Planned Kenilworth town centre murals now look in doubt
Plans to paint three murals in Kenilworth town centre now look unlikely after the town council ran out of time to apply for funding.
Kenilworth Town Council had intended to use the government's Welcome Back Fund to pay for the decorations in Abbey End.
Plans were first revealed last October with each mural intended to show a part of the town's history. The Augustinian abbey, the castle and the the 1266 siege were all to be depicted.
Councillors wanted to place them on the wall next to Forrest Coffee House, outside of the public toilets and on the wall next to the former Shakespeare's Hospice shop.
However, the council was unable to agree terms with the landlords. And with the March 31 funding deadline now passed, the council would have to find another way to finance the project.
A council spokesperson said to Nub News: "It doesn't mean it is out of the question.
"But there were issues with the landlords and the costs going up so nothing could be agreed before the deadline."
Despite the murals falling by the wayside for the time being, councillors said KTC had used the Welcome Back Fund effectively.
"I think it has been a success in so far as I believe we have spent most of the fund, although we did not manage to spend it all," said Cllr Michael Coker.
"From what I gather from the clerk we have done better than anyone else nearby.
"There are a variety of things that will benefit the town for some time to come that otherwise would not have been done.
"Painting the smaller lampposts was quite a job and nobody was looking at doing that. There are also of course still some benefits such as the cleaning of Abbey End."
