Abbey End could receive a splash of colour if Kenilworth Town Council presses forward with plans to paint three new murals in the town centre.

The murals, which could all display moments from the town's history, would be paid for by the government's Welcome Back Fund if permission is given by the council and the properties' owners.

KTC is looking to use the wall next to Forrest Coffee House, the wall on the other side of the old Shakespeare Hospice charity shop and on the public toilets.

Funding is also being sought to have Abbey End jet washed.

Speaking at yesterday's town council meeting Cllr Michael Coker said: "We are investigating whether or not we can put as many as three murals in Abbey End."

But stressed that "We are still discussing what can and what will be done."

However, if plans are approved the suggestion is that the mural closest to Forrest would be of the 1266 siege of Kenilworth.

"On the other wall, since this is the position where the Globe public house was and the memorial is," added Cllr Coker, "that mural might be the Globe, fitting in with the idea that around the town we are trying to develop trades for tourism.

"On the wall of the toilet, which of course is one of our main visitor stations, we perhaps thought that we might have a mural of the old abbey, which of course is equally as important as the castle but it does tend to disappear."

Welcoming the discussions Cllr Richard Dickson said the murals presented "something for all ages" and could "set the town apart and help bring people to Kenilworth."

The town council has already been in contact with one local artist for quotes, but any final decisions are yet to be made
