Bids from housing developers to help take Kenilworth Rugby Football Club's new ground plans forward are being "rigorously assessed".

The club's move to Warwick Road was cast into doubt earlier this year after housing developer Bloor Homes confirmed it was withdrawing from the process.

With planning permission previously granted for the new ground off Warwick Road, the developer was due to purchase the existing Glasshouse Lane sites and turn them into new homes, to help finance the project.

Last month the club confirmed it was approaching new developers in an attempt to keep the development moving forward, with a fresh update confirming multiple submissions had come to the club.

KRFC chair Paul Fountaine said in a statement: "As expected, a few of the selected developers who had previously expressed an interest, declined to tender for a variety of reasons, including the extent of the requirement for upfront funding to facilitate our move.

"The submissions that were received from the interested housebuilders are being rigorously assessed by our agents to ensure they meet KRFC’s key criteria, most importantly to ensure they allow the club to relocate and continue to sustain rugby at all levels now and for future generations."

Mr Fountaine did warn members the "complex proposals" need to have some aspects clarified and "cannot be rushed".

The club hopes to interview bidders by the end of August and update members in September.

The update continued: "As previously stated, a fundamental principal underpinning every decision is that KRFC will only progress what it can afford.

"We therefore also anticipate a review of the previously approved design to assess both viability and relevance with the club’s current and future requirements, including potential opportunities to build relationships with complimentary sports and the wider community.

"So, we’re off.

"We have formally engaged with development partners, and we are thick in the middle of detailed analysis of returns - a truly exciting next step for the club and securing and sustaining KRFC’s future."

Bloor's planning application to Warwick District Council for the 200 homes off Glasshouse Lane has not been withdrawn from consideration.
