Kenilworth Rugby Football Club is set to approach new housing developers in an attempt to keep its dream of a new ground alive.

The club's move to Warwick Road was cast into doubt earlier this year after housing developer Bloor Homes confirmed it was withdrawing from the process.

With planning permission previously granted for the new ground off Warwick Road, the developer was due to purchase the existing Glasshouse Lane sites and turn them into new homes, to help finance the project.

But with Bloor no longer involved in the project, the club has decided to "approach housebuilders interested in acquiring one or both parcels of Club-owned land".

"This move reignites our aspirations to relocate to a new clubhouse," a club statement from chair Paul Fountaine said.

It continued: "All indications suggest that KRFC is well-positioned to attract competitive proposals.

"We expect submissions to be received from interested housebuilders by mid-July.

"Once received, each proposal will be rigorously assessed to ensure it meets KRFC’s key criteria; most importantly, securing a deal that allows the Club to relocate and continue to sustain rugby at all levels now and for future generations."

Bloor's planning application to Warwick District Council for the 200 homes off Glasshouse Lane has not been withdrawn from consideration.

Wareing & Co. and Bromwich Hardy have been appointed as joint agents to oversee the marketing process.

The club said it hopes to feed back to members in August or September to "keep the project moving without delay".

"A fundamental principle underpinning every decision is that KRFC will only progress what it can afford," the statement added.

"As part of the process, we also anticipate a review of the previously approved design to assess its viability and relevance with the club’s current and future requirements, including potential opportunities to build relationships with complementary sports and the wider community."
