Kenilworth planning roundup 2021: 1,200 new houses, bar's licensing row and K2L finally approved

By James Smith 31st Dec 2021

Here are the biggest planning stories from Kenilworth in 2021.

New houses

Planning approval has been given for nearly 1,200 new houses on the east side of the town.

In April Warwick District Council approved an outline application for 620 new houses and a new primary school to be built behind the new Kenilworth School and the Woodside Hotel.

A detailed application has now been submitted and WDC has announced it will be investing £60 million in the scheme.

A further 550 new houses and a new primary school have also been approved between A46, Leamington Road and Glasshouse Lane.

The final green light was given for the scheme last week after the developers, Barwood Development Securities Ltd, completed a number of requirements for the council.

Licensing and planning row

A row over the Garden Bar at the Pavilion broke out towards the end of 2021 after Kenilworth Town Council asked WDC to investigate the use of the Pavilion as an events bar.

Residents also shared their views on the bar which they said was having a directly negative impact on their lives.

But the owner then hit back at the 'witch hunt' against her and her business, saying she had only done what the council had asked her to.

WDC has refused to comment.

Sport and exercise

Abbey Fields Leisure Centre and Castle Farm Recreation Centre have both had applications approved for their demolition and redevelopment.

Both sites are now closed to the public ahead of demolition in 2022.

The K2L Cycleway was finally approved by Warwickshire County Council in January after nearly 35 years of campaigning by local residents and groups.

And Kenilworth Rugby Club received approval for its move to Warwick Road back in February.
