Nearly 40 per cent of arrests over the Christmas weekend involved alcohol according to Warwickshire Police.

Of the 86 people arrested between December 24 and 29, 33 of them were on suspicion of offences committed while under the influence of alcohol.

38 people were arrested on suspicion of committing violent offences, 24 of which were domestic and two had a racial element.

And with New Year's Eve expected to be even busier, police are warning that there will be more officers on the street tonight.

Superintendent Mike Smith, head of community and response policing, has issued a stark warning to residents ahead of tonight.

"Committing an offence while under the influence of alcohol is no defence in law," he said.

"Getting arrested while drunk on a night out won't only ruin your night, it could ruin the rest of your life. It could cost you your job, future career and education prospects, your driving licence and the freedom to travel to some countries.

"We know the vast majority of people will got out, have a good time and get home safely. Unfortunately there is a minority who won't and they need to think about the potential consequences of their behaviour."

And with so many of the Christmas offences domestic related Supt Smith urged victims to speak up.

He added: "Most of the people in custody on suspicion of violent offences over the weekend were domestic related. Christmas can be a very difficult time for victims of domestic abuse if they have to spend more time at home with their abuser.

"I'd like to remind people we are here to help; please don't suffer in silence."
