Kenilworth Railway Station bottom of WMR's priority list says town's MP

By James Smith   30th Dec 2021

Kenilworth's MP has said the town's railway station appears to be at the bottom of West Midlands Railway's priority list as the service once again returns to a bus replacement.

MP for Kenilworth and Southam Jeremy Wright also said that more needed to be done to convince commuters that the Leamington to Nuneaton line will not always be the first to suffer when the company has problems.

WMR announced last week that all services through Kenilworth would be operated by bus "indefinitely" from December 27 due to driver shortages cause by Covid-19.

The operator had announced just weeks before that a full timetable would be reinstated from January 29 2022 for the first time in over a year.

But Mr Wright said the latest change was even more frustrating given the battle to resume a full service after the station reopened in April.

"It comes following hard won progress on the planned resumption of a full service at the end of January and on the opening of the station building for passenger use while a new tenant is found, and will be bad news for all who use the station," he said.

"Everyone will understand the difficulties that Covid absences among staff cause, but WMR need to do more to avoid giving the impression that this line is always among the last to receive resources and among the first to be restricted when problems occur.

"I will continue to express that view forcefully to them on my constituents' behalf."
