Shoppers and traders have shown "threatening and abusive behaviour" towards the operators of Kenilworth market.

CJ's Events Warwickshire, which runs the weekly market at Abbey End, has said that known individuals have responded inappropriately to the way the business is run.

Local authorities have been informed of the incidents.

A CJ's spokesperson said: "A handful of traders and market visitors are unhappy with how we are currently operating our business and, unfortunately, showing threatening and abusive behaviour both directly and indirectly.

"We are fully aware of who these individuals are, and appropriate action will be taken, and we will liaise with local authorities to ensure this is resolved appropriately."

The company is now threatening permanent bans to traders who do not comply with its official complaints procedure.

The spokesperson added: "We will not be bullied or dictated as to what we can and cannot do with our business by market traders or visitors."

CJ's, which had to cancel the Kenilworth Food Festival due to concerns over rising Covid cases locally, has also thanked the support of the town during the last 18 months.

"Thank you to everyone who has been so supportive over the past seven years, particularly over the pandemic. We are so grateful for the support and look forward to continuing to deliver high-quality markets and events over the coming years."

CJ's was awarded an extended contract to operate markets in the area by Warwick District Council earlier this year.

The company has taken over the Autumn and Christmas markets from previous organisers Sketts markets. WDC has confirmed that these two markets will reduce in size by 40 per cent.

This is "in order to improve access to the retailers located along the Parade and to ensure that the stalls that operate complement rather than be in direct competition with shops, cafes and restaurants with a permanent presence."

Fees for pitches have also been increased.

Backlash on social media, and an open letter by Leamington traders to WDC has followed the decision.

No individual traders have been named by CJ's.
