Access to the Kenilworth Greenway is set to be improved this summer, HS2 has confirmed.

The Balsall Common end of the route is regularly flooded and has been "unpassable for many years".

But the high speed rail developer has announced a new temporary link to the greenway from the Hallmeadow Road roundabout, as part of its project to open a new haul road.

From this summer, contractor BBV will open its new internal haul route from Hallmeadow Road, to carry material for the new bridge over the West Coast Mainline, and to Burton Green Tunnel.

An HS2 statement said: "We are pleased to inform you that this summer we will be opening our new haul road entrance off the Hallmeadow Road Roundabout in Balsall Common.

"Our vehicles will utilise the Hallmeadow Road route to bring materials to our work site allowing greater construction progress, as a dedicated haul route to the south of the West Coast Mainline to build up the embankment for the new bridge and to take materials to the Burton Green Tunnel."

It added: "You may be aware that the existing access to the Kenilworth Greenway is flooded and has been unpassable for many years.

"We are delighted to inform you that we have been able to incorporate a new temporary footpath alongside the haul road connecting Station Road to the temporary greenway."

Since 2021 contractor BBV has been using an internal haul road from the Aston Martin roundabout off the Kenilworth Road - this will be extended to Burton Green once the new bridge over the West Coast Main Line is built.

HS2 has not confirmed any exact dates for when the new haul road will be used from.

The news comes just weeks after HS2 was granted permission to send hundreds more lorries through the centre of Balsall Common every day, following an appeal to the planning inspectorate.
