English Heritage has said it respects the right of a former volunteer who protested outside Kenilworth Castle yesterday (July 11).

Bill Burton, who had been a volunteer at the town's main tourist attraction for six years, stood in the car park opposite Castle Green on Monday morning with a placard demanding that he was reinstated to his former role.

Castle operator English Heritage said Mr Burton had left the position "following a thorough review".

An English Heritage spokesperson said: "There was a protest outside Kenilworth Castle yesterday morning and of course, we respect the right to demonstrate peacefully.

"The person in question previously volunteered with English Heritage and left the charity following a thorough review.

"Every day hundreds of volunteers help us to tell the story of England and they are an integral part of the English Heritage team.

"Whether it's helping to plant bulbs in formal gardens, assisting with conservation works or answering questions from curious visitors we are grateful for all of the support, skills, and volunteered time which is given to our charity."

The charity did not comment on whether Mr Burton would be reinstated as a volunteer, nor whether any action would be taken following his protest.

Kenilworth Nub News has attempted to contact Mr Burton for comment.
