Town councillors will ask for a community banking hub to be launched in Kenilworth following the news that Lloyds will close its local branch.

The high street bank announced the closure of its Warwick Road branch earlier this year, saying just 511 customers visit in person on a monthly basis.

Members at Kenilworth Town Council (KTC) have since highlighted how this could leave some residents, charities and businesses vulnerable.

Councillors also raised concerns that - unlike in Warwick - it has been decided a 'banking hub' will not be needed.

Instead a 'community banker' is set to visit the town on a regular basis.

But at last week's KTC meeting it was agreed the council will write to Cash Access UK to ask it to review the decision not to run a hub.

Cllr Richard Dickson has also secured agreement from Cllr Ella Billiald (economy portfolio holder at Warwick District Council) that she will also write.

Local residents have also launched a petition to try and get a banking hub established.

Some 200 people have already signed the petition.

It states: "This has put our senior citizens in a difficult position, as many of them still prefer face-to-face banking methods to online platforms for their financial transactions and queries.

"The importance of maintaining our community's access to banking personnel cannot be understated."

The petition can be signed here.

Lloyds is set to shut for the final time in February 2025.

Explaining the decision to close the Kenilworth branch, Lloyds said: "Before we close any branch, we look at how our customers are managing their money and using the branch.

"Most customers are now using our Mobile Banking app, Internet Banking or calling us instead.

"This means they are using branches, including our Kenilworth branch much less.

"Because of this, we'll be closing our Kenilworth branch."

HalifaxHSBC and Barclays have all also closed their local branches.
