Wardens make easy work of Shilton in impressive preseason
By James Smith 6th Aug 2025

It was seven of the best as Kenilworth Wardens made easy work of Division Two Shilton to make it two from two in their preseason.
Wardens took just five minutes to open the scoring with James Clay finishing with his left foot from a tight angle to finish off a neat passing move involving Eamonn Richards, Jack Boden and Sol Bloomer.
Shilton nearly got straight back into the contest with keeper Dan Honey-Smith needed to produce an excellent save in his bottom right corner to keep Kenilworth ahead.
With more patience on the ball Wardens made it two. Richards played in man of the match Hayden Twycross who has made a sweeping run from right to left in behind. Twycross beat his marker and keeper to the ball, however rather than shooting calmly turned and squared to Dan Twigger who passed into an empty net.
Twycross was involved in the third goal too when an excellent cross was inadvertently cleared into Shilton net for an own goal.
Wardens could and should have added more except for some heroics from the Shilton keeper with him saving one-on-ones from Twigger, Clay and Wright.
On the stroke of half time Wardens did make it four. Twycross put pressure on a Shilton player whose touch fell to Richards who played the ball first time into Wright's run who calmed finished his chance.
Shilton improved the second half and were more competitive with Wardens struggling to turn chances into goals.
However they eventually found a fifth just after the hour when quick passing between Sol Bloomer, Josh Bloomer and Richards allowed Sol in between Shilton's defence before cutting in and whipping the ball into the corner which was saved but only into the path of Diarmuid Winston to tap in from a yard out.
Moments later 18-year-old debutant Josh Bloomer put pressure on a Shilton defender in the box, his clearance fell to Twigger who accepted the gift by riffling it into the top corner.
The final goal came in the 80th minute when Twigger's shot was blocked and the returning Ryan Oldham curled in a finish from the edge of the box.
"Shilton have a great set up and wish them well for the season," player-manager Richards said after the game.
"I think they'd agree there was a mismatch in terms of quality. We played some good football at points and good to see goals from different players.
"Really disappointing Jack Boden getting injured, need him fit and ready for the season since he's such an important player.
"Just need to make sure we're at 100% in every moment in the game off the ball, we became complacent at times and kept a clean sheet due to the individual quality of our defenders rather than the our shape and workrate.
"Good to see some really positive performances though, Hayden stood out again for different reasons than his excellent performance last week."
