By James Smith 27th Oct 2025
Wardens beat top of the table Folly Lane on penalties to progress to the second round of the Telegraph Cup in a landmark games as the Kenilworth side lined up for their 150th match since restarting in 2018.
Manager Eamonn Richards was also taking charge for his 300th game as he looked to upset Folly Lane who had won six out of seven - only dropping points in their 3-3 league draw with Wardens.
Wardens in contrast had lost 4-2 against AFC Coventry the previous week and were without 10 first team regulars for the game.
Predictably Folly were the better of the two sides in the opening minutes, twice coming close to scoring, only for debutant goalkeeper Tom Oliver's impressive save and the post keeping the score level.
Wardens came close to an opener on 15 minutes when Dylan Wright broke through a challenge and put an excellent ball across the box, however George Ferridge and captain Sol Bloomer could not reach it for a tap in.
Folly took a deserved lead on 20 minutes. A throw in 20 yards out was controlled in the box, the Folly player rolled two players before expertly curling into the bottom corner, leaving Oliver with no chance to save.
Wardens kept up the work rate and got an equaliser on 35 minutes.
Cameron Holder's throw in on the left hand side was played to Jack Boden. Boden rode two challenges before passing to Hayden Twycross 30 yards out.
Twycross put in a strong challenge with the Folly player before playing Adam Hnat in the box, who slipped in Boden to put the ball under the keeper for his third goal in as many games.
Folly Lane players were understandably upset with the referee's decision not to award a foul for Twycross' challenge.
At the start of the second half Folly thought they had pulled ahead again, however were stopped by a late offside flag.
Wardens nearly took the lead themselves after excellent work from Wright gave the ball to a free Sam Broad in the six yard box, however he could not direct his header on target.
As the game dragged on Folly continued to push for a winner however a mixture of excellent goalkeeping by Oliver, excellent defending and poor finishing left the score 1-1.
With five minutes left Oli Flynn thought he had won it when he chased onto a flick on from captain Sol Bloomer only for his shot to beat the keeper but fly inches wide of the post.
Despite pressure in the dying minutes on the Wardens goal the game ended 1-1 with penalties looming.
After a Wardens miss and four out of four penalties scored by Folly they had the chance to win, only for an excellent Oliver save to keep Wardens alive.
Flynn scored to equalise to put the penalties to sudden death.
A Folly miss was followed by Diarmuid Winston scoring the winning penalty, in his first penalty in men's football and his first completed 90 minutes.
"Folly lane are the best team in our league and will win the league this year," Richards said after the game.
"They have excellent players all over the pitch. I'm glad we won't have to play them again this year.
"Our back four and keeper today had one start for the Wardens in those positions between them.
"Cam (Holden) and Tom (Oliver) were excellent on their debuts.
"As a 14 today the only way we'd win is if we outworked Folly, which we did, that Tom and Jack Boden were excellent, which they were and that everyone played to their best of their ability, which they did.
"Really proud of these lads and honestly believe once everything clicks we'll be a team which wins most weeks."
