A disciplined and organised Kenilworth Wardens display saw them take a 2-0 away win against Triumph Athletic Reserves tonight.
The Wardens' first team backed up their 8-1 win over Christ the King III last time out with a far more pragmatic, but no less efficient display against Triumph today.
The home side dominated the ball throughout the first half, with Wardens sitting in a solid and narrow 4-4-2 soaking up the pressure. The Kenilworth side looked to win the ball back in their own half and set Dan Twigger and Ben Edmunds running into the channels on the counter attack.
Chances were few and far between in the opening 45 minutes, with the away side frustrating their hosts.
Only once did Triumph get in on goal in the first half. A lapse in concentration in midfield let runners pass through the Wardens' two banks of four and get a snap shot in on goal.
Andy Whitehouse was on hand in goal to keep the score level as he saved both the initial effort and the follow up.
The patience of the away side was, however, rewarded on the 40 minute mark. Sloppy passing from the Triumph keeper allowed Dan Twigger to steal the ball on the edge of the opposition's box. His strike was saved and pushed out wide to Dane Watt to calmly slot home.
Wardens held on to take a 1-0 lead into the break.
The second followed a similar theme, with Triumph's three-man midfield controlling the ball but being frustrated as Kenilworth cut out any real opportunity to progress up the pitch.
The first clear chance of the second half came to the away side after an hour of play. Manager Eamonn Richards registered his third assist in four games as he played Alex Waters into the right hand channel.
However, few spectators will remember Richards' part in the goal, as the sublime chip by Waters over an onrushing Triumph keeper will be the resounding memory of tonight's game.
With a two goal advantage, Wardens continued to hold their shape and limit chances, with Triumph resorting to pumping balls into the box in the hope of pulling a goal back.
The chance for the hosts to score was handed to them on 80 minutes as the referee awarded a dubious penalty for handball following pinball in the Wardens' box.
Andy Whitehouse was on hand once again though to maintain the clean sheet, diving low to his right hand side to save the ensuing spot kick.
The Kenilworth side were able to see the game out and secure a 2-0 victory.
They will travel to neighbours Kenilworth Sporting FC this Saturday in a friendly fixture.
