Parish councillors have raised serious concerns about the impact of over 2,000 new homes on Henley-in-Arden.

Beaudesert & Henley in Arden Joint Parish Council has released the statement it submitted to the two local district councils for the latest public consultation on the new South Warwickshire Local Plan (SWLP).

The feedback window for the major planning document closed earlier this month, as multiple town and parish councils objected to new homes being allocated in their area.

For Henley-in-Arden, 2,084 new homes are proposed to the north-west in land referred to as 'SG23' in the plan.

Concerns around the impact on the green belt, the "effect on Henley's historic character," traffic, flooding and impact on local services were all raised.

In its response, the joint parish council wrote: "The JPC accepts that new homes are needed and that some growth in Henley is appropriate.

"Our concern is the scale of what is proposed.

"We do not believe it has yet been clearly shown why Henley should take at least 2,084 new homes, or how the town and its services would cope with development on this scale."

The council held public meetings to gauge feedback from locals before submitting its feedback.

Councillors questioned "whether the proposed link road and new railway bridge can actually be funded and built" and "whether there will be enough school places, healthcare, social care and community facilities".

The council is asking Stratford-on-Avon and Warwick District Councils - who are creating the plan together - to "look again" at what is being planned for Henley.

"If the district councils cannot provide clear evidence showing why at least 2,084 homes are needed at Henley and how they can be supported, the minimum figure should be removed or the number of homes should be significantly reduced," the response said.

It continued: "The district councils should also assess the potential effect of the proposed neighbourhood centre on Henley High Street and show how the new development would be properly connected to the existing town."

Following the closure of the latest consultation, the councils will work to finish the draft of SWLP before submitting it to the government by the end of the year for approval.
