Kenilworth Wardens lifted the plate trophy at yesterday's six-a-side charity tournament at Stockton Football and Cricket Club.

Wardens sent two teams to the tournament, with a mix of first, reserve and youth team players involved.

Neither side managed to finish in the top two of their respective groups, and as such were entered into the plate tournament.

After a defeat to Forresters in their opening game, Wardens A managed to pick up seven points from their next three games to clinch third spot.

The A side then defeated Stockton A 2-1 in the plate quarter finals, thanks to goals from James Butler and Eamonn Richards. Wardens A then registered the same scoreline in their semi final with Butler hitting his fifth goal of the tournament and 17-year-old Joe Feraz scoring the winner in his first game of men's football.

The plate final then put Bishops Itchington up against Kenilworth Wardens A. Wardens took the lead after just eight seconds after Eamonn Richards took two attempts to head in a rebounded Ben Edmunds shot.

Edmunds' free kick and sixth goal of the tournament four minutes later made it 2-0. Wardens then increased their advantage to 3-0 minutes later after Richards set up the youngster Farez for a simple finish. Bishop's late consolation goal was not enough to stop Kenilworth taking the silverware.

Wardens A's plate win was largely down to their impressively defensive display, with outstanding performance from Phil Rudd, Will Kershaw and goalkeeper Andy Whitehouse. Whitehouse deserves additional credit for his creativity from his penalty area, having registered several assists from his ball distribution.

Kenilworth B started the group stages with wins over AFC Woods, Southam and Heathcote, but then fell to defeats against Royal Oak and Leamington Hibs.

Sean Povey lead the way with five goals, with Tom Perrin, Archie Evans and Charlie Waters getting two each, and the every tricky Sol Blomer getting one.

In the quarter final, a 0-0 draw vs Jolley Abbott lead to penalties, with Wardens losing 3-1.

With good showing for both teams, the main take away from the tournament was the players got some much needed minutes under their belts ahead of pre season beginning on Thursday.

Fellow Kenilworth side The Engine progressed to the semi-finals of the main tournament before losing out 2-1 to Forresters in the semi-finals.

Rugby Borough then beat Forresters on penalties to win the main tournament.
