Kenilworth Wardens first team went into their home match against AFC Binley Reserves knowing they needed to win their final two games to progress out of their Bermuda Cup group.

Wardens got off to the perfect start when, 10 minutes in, Roger Kingston passed the ball to player manager Eamonn Richards who swept it into Guy Pearson in the box.

Top scorer Pearson beat his man and calmly passed the ball into the net making it 1-0 - his 21st goal of the season, with the creative Richards getting his 13th assist of the campaign.

Wardens could have made it 2-0 when a great deep through ball by Pearson found Toby Wells who couldn't put it away. Pearson set up Wells again moments later but the keeper saved another shot.

It was then Richards turn to play the ball to Wells, who this time turned his marker inside out before lashing towards the corner only for the Binley keeper to pull off a brilliant save.

From the resulting corner, Richards' ball was flicked on by captain Tom Griffith's onto Ash Saines, who would be disappointed not to score from 6 yards out.

Binley were playing well in the middle third of the pitch, working the ball into good areas without creating chances.

However they equalised on the 35th minute. A poor corner was over hit towards the edge of the box, the Binley striker miscontrolled the ball before striking an outrageous overhead kick which fell to a Binley player to head home off the post.

The second half continued in the same vain, with Binley dominating in the middle of the pitch but not looking like scoring.

Wardens had a chance on the 55th minute when a Richards corner was again flicked on by Griffith to Pearson, who beat his man with his turn but lost balance when applying his finish from 4 yards.

A couple of minutes later another Richards set piece was played perfectly towards Saines, who brought the ball down 4 yards out but once again lost balance as he went to shoot, with the keeper saving his weak shot.

On 70 minutes a good move found Richards who played Pearson in behind for a one on one, however his chipped finished from the on rushing keeper went wide.

Wardens back four continued to only give half chances despite the pressure put under from Binley, with James Butler at left back being particularly impressive.

In the 90th minute, Wardens moved the ball from right back to left midfield where Richards ran onto a forward pass and crossed to Andy Legg whose header beat the keeper, but couldn't beat the crossbar.

The ball hit Wells on the rebound but went agonisingly wide.

"We weren't great today," said Richards after the full time whistle.

"But we restricted them to no clear cut chances and created nine of our own. Better finishing or if we played on a better pitch, the game could have been six or seven to one.

"They were good in the middle third, we struggled against their system, but our defence were brilliant today. Kingston, Saines and Griffith were great and Butler was perfect.

"Its frustrating because it means our chances of getting to another final is essentially gone and when you miss that many chances it feels like a loss.

"But it is what it is, I've got a great group of lads and I fully trust they'll turn up for me next Friday for the Bedworth Nursing cup final."
