Martin Ascroft said it was the 'same old story' as his Kenilworth Sporting side lost out to league leaders Cadbury Athletic in their final home game of the season.

Tom Craine scored his 29th goal of the season to claim all three points for Cadbury and to punish the hosts for wasting chances.

"It's the same old story I'm afraid," said Ascroft.

"Goals win games.

"I'm not going to dwell on stats, chances, possession, it means nothing if you don't score, anyone watching the game would agree that we played very well but it's the same old story of our season."

Craine's 20th minute strike leaves Kenilworth fourth with just one league game of the season remaining and their chances of promotion over.

But despite thinking his side should have got something out of the game, Ascroft was complimentary of the runaway leaders.

"Cadbury are the league champions for a reason, consistency throughout the campaign is imperative.

"Both ends of the pitch they have been outstanding, organised and tough to break down at the back and up top clinical.

"You don't get points and championships by creating chances and missing them, you don't win games by just being the better side, you win games by scoring and not conceding sloppy goals."

Sporting will travel to play Alvis on Thursday in what could be a season-defining semi-final of the Coventry Charity Cup with the final set to be played at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
