Kenilworth Sporting's promotion to the Midland Football League Division Two has been officially confirmed today.

Sporting, who re-entered the league for the 2019-20 season, sat top of division three when all competitive fixtures were curtailed in February.

Having won seven of their eight league fixtures to that point Sporting looked set to be in the mix come the end of the season had it not been cancelled.

However, due to Solihull United, and Northfield Town leaving the league above, Sporting have been invited to fill one of the vacant spots in division two. The second place will be filled by Cadbury Athletic who will come down from division one.

After hearing the decision today first team manager Martin Ascroft said to Nub News: "It is fantastic news, whether it was eight games or not, we finished top of the pile and deservedly so I believe. I personally believe that if the season had been finished that we would have gone on and been promoted regardless.

"I am also delighted for Geoff Harris, the owner, he loves his football but being the owner of a football club is a thankless task at this level, you're not getting anything back bar cups, results and promotions."

He added: "We are a small group, there is no larger committee so it is pretty good. Personally I would just like to thank everyone for their help and support."

The announcement of promotion comes as more good news, following the decision to form a reserve side and a youth team for the 2020/21 season.

Ascroft has also added to his squad in preparation for preseason - Joe Wright and Corey Brookes have been brought in to provide some higher-level experience.

Speaking on today's announcement club secretary Mark Eyden said: "Geoff and I would like to thank the management and the team for the promotion. Martin said that he would get the club up and he has certainly done that."

Looking ahead to next season he added: "Whether we come bottom or wherever next season, no cancellation would be absolutely brilliant, to get the full season in is what the lads and the management are all after."

The first team has now restarted training and will play their first pre-season match on June 25.
