A second half brace from in-form Dan Twigger saw Kenilworth Wardens take a point off reigning champions AFC Coventry.

Twigger equalised the club's scoring record with his 72nd and 73rd goals for the Glasshouse Lane outfit as they played out a hard fought and bizarre 2-2 draw.

AFC Coventry came into the game unbeaten for more than a year in the league and coming off three wins in a row.

Understandably they started the better side and only two stops from Tom Day in the Wardens goal kept the game scoreless.

On 15 minutes AFC took the lead after a powerful driving run through the midfield played in AFC's striker, Abdulramon Jaji, who slotted into the bottom corner.

Despite AFC having more of the ball, Wardens looked dangerous on the counter attack.

Jack Boden, Eamonn Richards and Kiran Jayaram all played Twigger in behind but he was denied by a string of good saves and near misses to keep the game at 1-0.

On 30 minutes Kenilworth felt strongly they should have won a penalty as Twigger was felled 10 yards out with a tackle from behind.

Somehow the half finished 1-0 despite Dylan wright coming close for the home team and Richards saving a shot off the line in the dying minutes of the half.

Moments after half time AFC rattled the post with a powerful shot, which looked destined to be a goal.

On 55 minutes Wardens broke down the left with Boden. His cross was half cleared to Twigger in the box, his shirt was slightly pulled whilst he was tackled for the referee to award a soft penalty and in the aftermath AFC had a player sin-binned for 10 minutes.

Twigger stepped up and passed in to make it 1-1.

The game fell into the bizarre after Wardens drew level. A wild tackle from Richards got a deserved yellow card, which angered the AFC bench who wanted more.

Within a minute of this, the referee stopped and abandoned the game due to the abuse he was receiving. However despite Wardens' players already having left the pitch, the referee decided to restart the game 10 minutes later.

With AFC looking constantly likely to add to their lead, they retook it with an excellent team goal on 73 minutes as Leandro Castanho slotted home his fifth goal of the season.

That lead would only last two minutes though before Twigger athletically volleyed home after captain Alex Cockburn flicked on Henry Facchino's long throw.

AFC pushed for a winner but were stopped by heroic defending by Cockburn, Alex Bradley and Day. At the other end, three times Wardens went in behind in the dying minutes, only for the club linesman to dubiously put his flag up for offside.

"They're a really really good side; there is a reason they haven't lost in the league in a year and won the league last season," Richards said.

"I don't think we could argue if we lost that game, equally if we had proper linesman today I think we go on to win.

"We're in good form and that performance was excellent. Cockburn was immense at the back but everyone had a good game. Twigger again making the contributions which turn losses into results and deserves being all time top scorer.

"Abuse of referees and officials is all over grassroots football and it needs to be stamped out of the game, some of the scenes today were embarrassing."
