Kenilworth Sporting still sit in first place in the Midlands League Division Three, despite a 2-1 loss away at Upton Town this weekend, their first defeat of the season.

Sporting, who had won six from six before this weekend, started the game well and created chances which they couldn't take.

The scoreline remained at 0-0 going into half time.

Upton Town, who sat seventh before the game, took the lead shortly into the second half. A free kick was played into the box, a centre half went to control the ball on his chest at the far post only for it to somehow squirm into the Sporting net.

Kenilworth soon regained parity however. Steer was upended in the box leaving the referee with no choice but to point to the spot.

The spot kick was duly dispatched by Evans to make the game 1-1.

However the hosts were to regain the lead from another set piece. An unnecessary free kick was given away 35 yards out, and hit hopefully at the Kenilworth goal, somehow sailing into the top corner. A goal which manager Martin Ascroft said after the game, he was very disappointed to concede.

Sporting continued to create chances in the last 15 minutes, but every one came and went as they were unable to find an equaliser.

The clearest chance came on 80 minutes when Steer was brought down for the second penalty for the away side.

Evans stepped up to take his second penalty which was saved by the keeper, and then the rebound hit over the bar with the keeper still on the ground.

Speaking to Nub News after the game Ascroft said "On any other day we win the game 5-2 , dominated possession, especially in the 2nd half , but Upton had a game plan and stuck to it, defended very well and were very physical to say the least.

"Just wasn't going to be our day, we will regroup at training and go again next weekend. We missed three key players for sure that were unavailable due to work and family commitments."

The good news for Sporting however is that both Enville Athletic and Inkberrow drew, meaning that Kenilworth stay top. Although it must be said that both have games in hand over the first placed side.

Kenilworth Sporting will return to Gypsy Lane to host Birmingham Tigers as they hope to bounce back.
