Late Edmonds goal rescues point for Wardens
By James Smith 28th Oct 2026
Wardens continued their unbeaten run at home with a late equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw against Coventry Phoenix.
Ben Edmunds found the back of the net on 86 minutes to cancel out Coventry's early open.
The game started lively with both sides having chances. Jack Boden set up an early chance for Edmunds, however it was well saved.
At the other end Phoenix hit the crossbar from a long range effort.
Wardens looked more likely to score, with captain James Clay hitting the woodwork from a corner, an effort saved off the line and Dylan Wright forcing the keeper into an excellent save.
But it was against the run of play that Phoenix took the lead when a free kick was deflected and wrong-footed the Wardens defence and rolled slowly into the middle of the goal.
Wardens then pushed for an equaliser, coming closest when Eamonn Richards' shot went narrowly wide just before half time.
After the restart the hosts were in complete control and pushed for an equaliser, hitting the post twice and having three efforts cleared off the line.
With 5 minutes left, Richards played an inch perfect pass to Edmunds, who one-on-one lifted the ball over the keeper to equalise.
Moments later Wardens thought they had taken the lead, when Richards played in Edmunds again, his shot beating the keeper but hitting the side netting.
"Performance levels last few weeks have been good," Richards said after the game.
"I think we'd have lost that game at the start of the season. But we showed quality and determination to get back into the game.
"We had enough chances to win several games and feel the draw is the least we deserved. Defensively we were really good today, considering the makeshift defense we had out.
"Having a good strong bench makes a difference and all three lads brought energy, pace and quality."
