Travellers given notice to move from Kenilworth Rugby Club pitch by police
A group of travellers who moved onto Kenilworth Rugby Club's pitch on Monday night (May 29) have been told to move by the police.
The Glasshouse Lane club has told locals and members to stay away from the site as it works with Warwickshire Police to resolve the situation.
And now the police have served a notice to the travellers, telling them to move by tomorrow.
A force statement today (May 31) said: "We were made aware of an unauthorised encampment on Glasshouse Lane shortly before 8pm on Monday.
"We have been engaging with the group and this morning have served a notice for them to leave the area within 24 hours.
"Should they fail to do so, we will enforce the notice tomorrow."
Supt Ross Campbell added: "We have been working with all parties throughout the day to identify a resolution to the unauthorised encampment at the rugby club in Kenilworth.
"While this is ongoing, there will be a continued police presence in the area."
On Monday the club posted a statement on its website saying: "There are a large number of caravans and cars on the pitch which is very disappointing and the safety of our members and staff is paramount.
"The police are aware and we are also in touch with the relevant authorities to attempt to make their departure as swift as possible.
"We would ask members not to attend the club whilst the situation is still being resolved.
"The clubhouse will of course be closed until further notice."
The news comes just weeks after pupils at Myton School were forced to stay at home for the day, as travellers moved onto the school's playing fields.
