Tomato varieties has been put forward as a potential theme for 40 new street names in Kenilworth.

The town council has been asked by its district colleagues to suggest ideas for the roads being built as part of the major housing developments on the east side of town.

And with the area historically used as market gardens, councillors said this part of Kenilworth's past should not be forgotten.

"When we were doing this I spoke to a geographer, and geographers really like road names being linked to what was on the site before, so that for generations to come they know what was the purpose of the area," explained Cllr Alan Chalmers at last week's Kenilworth Town Council meeting.

"That is why the tomatoes are there because I think it is important to remember what the area was."

Tomato varieties was one of 12 different themes put forward.

Other ideas included previous mayors, young people who have recently died, lost street names and local nature.

But the main theme remained 'Heroes of Kenilworth' which was suggested last month when the town council was first approached for ideas.

Cllr Alix Dearing added: "We decided that we would start with Cllr Alison Firth's idea of heroes of Kenilworth.

"But then it seemed like it would be a good idea to divide that up into various types of heroes - recent and significant individuals who have made significant contribution to the community or of national significance.

"Then there are some historic landowners or benefactors, notably to do with the acquisition of Abbey Fields.

"And then I have also included the names of Kenilworth civilian victims of World War Two as well as our heroic charities."

Councillors were also quick to thank members of the community who had contributed or put forward suggestions on social media.

And in particular Cllr Dearing mentioned the help of local historian Robin Leach.

"I would particularly like to thank Robin Leach," she said.

"He has, at the last minute, come up with some excellent suggestions here."

Suggestions, which "are not set in stone", will be sent to Warwick District Council for discussion on June 17.
