'Heroes of Kenilworth' could be the theme for the new street names at a major housing development on the east side of the town.

Early construction has already begun on the 550 new houses being built on Leamington Road.

And Kenilworth Town Council has been asked to provide a theme and ten street names for phase one of the estate, which will see 92 homes constructed.

The council has also been asked for a theme for the roads connecting the remaining 442 homes once phase two has been given full planning permission.

Speaking at last week's finance and general services committee meeting, Cllr Alison Firth suggested that the roads should be named after people with real local significance.

"I wondered whether a good theme would be heroes of Kenilworth or those modern day people who have put lots of effort into making it such a great place," she said.

"Proper people who would be recognised for their good work in the community, rather than just 'Lord Leycester Road' or something like that."

Other councillors agreed, stating that it would be a good chance to reach out on social media for residents' suggestions.

Members said names could include people of much wider significance as well as those only known within the town.

"I like doing something that is actually connected to the people of Kenilworth," said Cllr Andrew Milton.

"This is a new development and actually it would be great if part of that naming strategy they felt somehow connected to the rest of the town that they are joining.

"I think it is a good idea, whether it is local heroes or people who have got more national renown like Earl Cameron or Edward Langley Fardon, inventor of the bicycle.

"It gives a sense of place."

Members also said the heroes theme would be a good way of making sure names previously suggested were also used.

Cllr Richard Dickson added: "I know we have suggested the names of people who were heroes and also those who were taken sadly too young, such as Milan Patel, Angela Cannadine who was a school teacher at Kenilworth School, and there was a girl called Sally Woodhouse who died of meningitis of 2006.

"They were all heroes in some way"

The council has set up a small task and finish group to come up with a list to send to Warwick District Council's street naming team.

And Cllr Kate Dickson said: "When our submission goes, this is a personal bugbear that many of you will have heard before, please can we ask the developers that the street names go up early."
