Residents have been given the chance to have their say on plans to install speed bumps and extend the 30mph speed limit along a busy Kenilworth road.

Warwickshire County Council (WCC) is asking for feedback on the plans for Warwick Road, which could see eight sets of speed bumps built.

If approved, the scheme would also see the 30mph speed limit extended 230 metres down the road, past Wilkshire Road and the Pavilions housing estate.

New streetlights would also be installed.

The consultation comes after months of work by Kenilworth Town Council (KTC) to improve road safety up to St John's roundabout.

"The aim is to reduce vehicle speeds through this section of Warwick Road as this is currently partly a 50mph speed limit," a WCC report said. 

"A reduced speed limit would improve road safety and improve the environment for all road users. 

"The scheme will involve the use of road humps (speed cushions) and speed limit signage with associated road markings to reinforce the new limit once installed."

Locals have until September 22 to respond to the consultation.

Residents in the immediate vicinity of Warwick Road have already been asked for their opinions, and said they did not want speed bumps all the way up to the roundabout.

Updated plans have the speed bumps up until the junction with Rouncil Lane.

"The scheme will help improve the environment for residents, pedestrians, and cyclists by restricting vehicle speeds and improving road safety," the report added. 

"This will also be accompanied by new streetlighting measures as part of the traffic calming works and reduced speed limit."

KTC has already approved a £63,000 spend from its CIL budget for the 'Kenilworth Gateway' scheme.

Councillors said the scheme would help connect residents on the Pavilions estate with the rest of the town.

Speaking at the most recent KTC meeting, members said they would feedback on the consultation, but expressed frustration with the slow movement on the project.

"We actually asked for this three years ago for this and it has taken this long. It is disappointing that it has taken this long," said Cllr James Kennedy.

Cllr Richard Dickson added: "The consultation was due to start in April, and there has been a lot of chasing over the county council and the district council to find out when the consultation would go ahead.

"I am grateful to Cllr [Rik] Spencer who has also been chasing as well."

The Warwick Road project follows a petition submitted to Warwickshire County Council by local residents calling on members to "see sense" and move the 30mph speed limit past the entrance to the estate.
