Plans to repair Kenilworth war memorial after 'careless' driver crashes into it

There are two options available for the repair of Kenilworth's war memorial which was damaged in a "careless" crash earlier this year.
The memorial at Abbey End was hit by a car in April, leaving both the railings and the stonework damaged.
A man was arrested for drink driving after the incident, and the railings have since been removed.
But with just weeks until Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, works to repair the memorial are moving forward.
A recent update from Warwick District Council to town councillors said: "The structural engineer's report firstly confirmed that the memorial was safe.
"It has also confirmed that the impact of the car caused the rotation of the memorial by about 50mm, while also dislodging the steps and opening them out to a similar dimension."
At the most recent Kenilworth Town Council meeting, it was also revealed there are two options for its repair, with one "considerably more feasible than the other".
The first option is a more minor repair to the joints in the stonework and the steps, filling them with mortar.
The second is to "fully dismantle" the memorial's stonework in order to restore it comprehensively.
The latter was described as a "considerable task" with option one seen as a more "pragmatic approach".
"I would like to obtain a budget figure for option two, simply because I am so saddened by the careless nature of the event that caused the damage," the update continued.
"It would allow us to consider whether this is a practical solution."
Repairs to the railings around the memorial have already been ordered.
Speaking at last week's full Kenilworth Town Council meeting, Cllr Kate Dickson said: "If they are expecting considerable cost, whether they can reclaim that from the insurance I don't know.
"We don't want to be without the war memorial for an extensive time and there is the potential for the memorial to be damaged while the job is being done.
"That all needs to be taken into account."
Cllr James Kennedy added: "I think we all support the idea of going ahead and I have heard from the Royal British Legion they are very concerned the railings do get reinstalled ahead of Remembrance Sunday."
