Plans to renovate a Kenilworth pub's 'neglected' front terrace have been given the go-ahead by Warwick District Council.

Proposals to build a new shelter and redecorate outside the Green Man pub were revealed last month.

The scheme, which was given planning permission this week, will see a single-storey extension built by the main entrance of the Warwick Road venue.

The structure will be made of metal with a retractable cream-coloured fabric roof and glazed sliding doors.

Owner Mitchells and Butler also revealed plans to rip up the existing paving and then tile the outdoor space, as well as building a new accessible ramp for the fire escape doors.

A district council report said: "The extension being situated to the side of the building is set back a considerable distance from the street, nevertheless the extension will not have a negative impact on the street scene and is of an acceptable design for the public house and the surrounding area."

It added: "Officers are satisfied that the extension will not have a negative impact on the neighbouring property in terms of light and outlook."

Kenilworth Town Council, which said it had no reason to object to the plans, had asked its district colleagues to investigate the impact of the new lighting.

But WDC planners said the lights were not significant enough to be considered.

"The lighting in the trees does not amount to development which requires planning permission and are not considered as part of this assessment," the council report said.

In the application Mitchells and Butler said the renovations will "complement and enhance" the outdoor area and "prolong the longevity and use of the space".

"The external space of the building has been left neglected over time as the focus for works has been completed on the building and is needs a general uplift to make better use of the space, tidy up the site and enhance its use, especially given the changing operational needs of the business in the recovery from the recent coronavirus pandemic," the planning application said.

"The proposal works will offer a way to help improve externally, in a relatively minimal way, to enhance the facilities the Green Man offers to the surrounding community."

Mitchells and Butler has announced this week that the Queen and Castle on Castle Road will close for a month whilst it is renovated.
