A Kenilworth primary school has been praised for the way it supports its pupils, having kept hold of its 'good' Ofsted rating.

Following a routine visit at the end of 2023, inspectors found children were "very proud of" and "enjoy coming to" St John's Primary School.

The Mortimer Way school has held a good rating since 2014, and according to Ofsted, continues to provide a quality education for local youngsters.

"Pupils are keen to be involved in school life, for instance, as junior, digital or sports leaders," the report said.

"They know how to keep themselves safe.

"All spoken to were unanimous that they would speak to a trusted adult if worried or upset. Pupils behave well and have a positive attitude towards their learning.

"They reflect the school values of 'safe, responsible and ambitious' every day. The school deals with any rare instances of bullying effectively.

"The school has set high expectations for all pupils.

"Pupils live up to these expectations. For instance, pupils do very well in their reading and mathematics. "Those who find learning difficult progress rapidly because of the support they receive."

Inspectors also praised the school for celebrating its "diverse and inclusive community" and for offering a wide range of extra activities.

St John's - which is designated as a bee-friendly and plastic-free school - was also acknowledged for having improved attendance for disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND, which was a weakness highlighted previously.

The only place for improvement was in developing staff knowledge.

"There have been changes in some leadership and teaching posts at the start of this term," the report added.

"As a result, some staff are new to their roles, and still developing their knowledge and understanding to embed the wider curriculum further."

Plans to expand St John's are currently underway, with £6 million recently ring-fenced by Warwickshire County Council's cabinet to boost the capacity by 210 pupils over the next seven years.

The scheme could see the Mortimer Road school have "several new extensions", increasing from one to two forms of entry from September 2024.

Kenilworth Nub News has approached St John's for comment.
