A South Warwickshire food business has been handed a boost by councillors who have this week given it permission to tour around the district.

Warwickshire Spud Co. has been granted a mobile street trading licence, allowing it to set up shop at various places around Warwick district.

Warwick District Council's licensing committee signed off on the pass this week, and gave the business permission to stay in one spot longer than the 15 minutes usually allowed.

The time limit is usually in place for ice cream vans.

Speaking at this week's meeting, Warwickshire Spud Co. owner Gareth Beck told councillors he sees a "strong need" for jacket potatoes and other "hearty, fresh" food in the local area.

He said the business intends to set up in local industrial estates at lunch times to provide food to the staff at the businesses there.

The business intends to go to different locations on different days of the week.

"Our whole business idea has been set up around efficiency," he explained.

"What we have designed is quite an in-depth online ordering system where employees can order days, weeks, even hours ahead of when they would like to collect.

"What we believe this will do for our business, [it] will ensure efficiency and secondly for the customers, they come, receive their order which has already been paid for online and then they can leave."

Mr Beck also said he was committed to not trade within half a mile of another vendor to "protect everyone's interests".

The panel agreed to grant the mobile licence on the condition the van is not in place for more than five hours in any one location, and does not return for another two.
