Kenilworth planning roundup: Barns to become houses, solar farm discussions and affordable housing
Below are the key Kenilworth planning applications recently received or discussed by Warwick District Council.
Affordable housing shortage
Plans to build 7,000 affordable houses by 2029 look in doubt as the district council continues to fall behind its own planning targets.
But between March 2020 and April 2021 just 228 affordable houses were built in the district - 61 per cent of the council's target.
Since 2011 WDC has only hit its targets twice - in 2018/19 and 2019/20.
And the council said it "cannot be accurately forecast" whether the target will be met.
Solar farm
Kenilworth Town Council will discuss plans to build a solar farm in Honiley the size of 200 football pitches.
The solar farm, which is being planned by Enso Energy, could cover up to 137 hectares of land either side of Honiley Road.
Construction is expected to take around seven months, and the farm could be in place for up to 40 years.
Farm buildings to five houses
Calm Holmes has submitted an application to knock down eight barns and farm buildings in Beausale and replace them with five houses.
The developers have already had a similar application to build nine homes rejected by Warwick District Council.
If approved, two semi-detached bungalows, two semi-detached four-bed houses and a detached four-bed house would be built.
Battery factory boost
Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Michael Gove has decided not the review plans to build a huge battery factory at Coventry Airport.
Mr Gove had three weeks to "call-in" the planning decision for review, which he has decided not to do.
Leader of WDC Cllr Andrew Day said it was "great news for the West Midlands.
"Michael Gove has decided not to call-in the gigafactory decision, giving the all clear to grant planning consent for this £2.5b game changer."
